Wednesday, May 27th

Dear Families, Graduates, and Staff,
Mother Nature has not been smiling on our plans for outside graduation Friday night. Between the stormy weather predicted and a little loosening of restrictions, we have decided to move graduation back to the original location in the gym. We will still try to follow guidelines for social distancing and limit graduates and marshals to 6 family guests. The ceremony will be streamed live on the Pee Dee Academy Facebook page for all those who would like to join virtually.

There are a few things to remember:
1. If you are sick, please do not come. Watch on Facebook.
2. If you are in a high-risk group, come at your own risk. Pee Dee Academy is not responsible for  any illness you happen to contract while at graduation.
3. Face masks are recommended, though not required.
4. There will be no restroom facilities.
5. There will be hand sanitizing stations available.
6. Please be respectful of others. Stay in your ticketed seat.
7. If you choose to watch the ceremony on Facebook, we cannot guarantee the quality of the transmission. We will do our best.
8. Since family groups are assigned seats, there is no need to come too early. However, we will begin at 7 pm.
9. Our graduation ceremony has traditionally been a formal event. We ask the family to stand when your graduate's name is called.
10. Please remain in your seats as the Graduates recess to the back of the gym to toss their caps. This would be the time for loud cheering!

Our faculty is normally an important part of the graduation ceremony. However, in order to accommodate family members, our faculty will not participate this year.
Congratulations!
Thank you,
Hal Townsend, Will  Eskridge, Josie Snipes

We respectfully request that you leave the school grounds immediately following the ceremony.

Hope you are staying well and working steady.
After discussing options and making plans for the end of school, we want to share the information with you.

Please bring your spring sports uniforms to return at that time. It would be helpful if you put it in a bag with your name on it. This way you will be sure to get credit for returning your uniform.

Graduation will be May 29, 2020, at 7 pm on Lon M. Spivey Field
. To be safe guests will be limited to family members of seniors so that we may practice social distancing. We plan to live stream the ceremony so that all others can participate virtually. Seniors and their families will receive more detailed information shortly.
K5 Kindergarten has special plans for their graduates on May 22. If you have a student finishing K5 this spring, please be on the look out for messages from teachers for plan details on how to help build a K5 slide show for the PDA website.
Thank you for your continued support of our school, especially our teachers and students. We appreciate the dedicated work of parents.

Tuesday, May 5th
Good morning, PDA Family,
Hope you are all well and working steady.
We have a few new guidelines to share. We are still working on other decisions and will let you know as soon as those decisions are made.
1. Yearbook pickup will be Thursday, May 7. Seniors should be in the High School parking lot at 9 AM to see the dedication and honor presented. Remain in your car
. After the dedication seniors will drive thru to pick up their yearbooks.
10 am-11 am Junior and Sophomore Drive Thru

11 am-12 am Freshmen and 8th Grade Drive Thru
12 noon-1pm 7th Grade Drive Thru
Elementary yearbook pickup will be Monday, May 11, during the regular Pick-up/Drop-off .

2. This is Teacher Appreciation Week. Be sure to tell your teachers how much you appreciate them!
3. Monday, May 11, will be Pick-up/Drop-off Day for getting assignments for the last week of school work and returning work completed during the previous 2 weeks. As before, elementary student work will be available in the elementary lot and upper school  work will be in the upper school lot. Pick-up/Drop-off Day will last from 11am until 2pm.
4. The final Drop-off Day will be Monday, May 18.
5. We asked teachers to tell us what they thought was the fairest way to grade for the 4th Nine Weeks. Responses were varied - from Pass/Fail to normal grading, with no option having a majority. The teaching format we have been using works well for some students but not others. It is also more difficult for some teachers than others. With limited training our teachers have done an amazing job! There does not seem to be a perfect answer, so we have decided to try to meet in the middle.
After serious consideration of grading feedback and long deliberation, we have come to a decision. To figure a grade for 4th quarter, teachers will pull the 3rd quarter grade at 33.3%, count effort at 33.3%, and use actual grades from work at 33.3%. The 2nd semester average will come from the 3rd quarter at 50% and 4th quarter at 50%.
In the lower school all grading will be pass/fail.

6. Please do not forget your contracts for next year. The office is open Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

Thank you for your continued support,
Hal Townsend/Josie Snipes
Monday, April 27th
Our next dropoff/pickup day will be Monday, April 27th from 11 AM - 2 PM.
Teachers will come to your car for the exchange. Please do not get out of your vehicle.
At-Home Learning weeks will be for April 27th-May 1st and May 4th-May 8th.
Friday, April 24th

Dear PDA Family,

Hope you are well and have adjusted to the new normal. It sounds like we will experience even more change in the next few weeks. Discussions are in progress about how we will proceed from here. Be assured, as soon as decisions are made, you will be informed. Our next learning at home session begins Monday, April 27, and will cover assignments until May 8. On Monday, April 27, we will have another Drop Off/Pick Up day from 11 am until 2 pm. Elementary teachers will be at a table in the elementary parking lot  and upper-school teachers will distribute from their cars in the upper school lot. Please drive through as directed and please do no get out of your car. We are trying to protect you and our teachers. Thanks for your cooperation.

After the Governor's announcement that public schools would not reopen this school year and SCISA's request to follow suit, we are now working on plans to finish our school year. Many of you have expressed concern about graduation. Pee Dee Academy Seniors will graduate May 29. It will not be the traditional ceremony in the gym, but we are working on plans to make it a special time to celebrate our graduates. Other end of year events are also being considered. As soon as these decisions are made, you will be informed. Thank you for your patience. Working together will make things happen!

When we complete the April 27- May 8 learning at home session, we will do a final one-week session from May 11-15 with Drop Off/Pick Up on that Monday, May 11. The following week, May 18-22, will be time set aside for contacts to be made between teachers, parents, and students if needed. We understand that those who have classes online and do not have internet at home require arrangements to get their work done. All work should be completed by this time.

Thank you for continuing to support your students and teachers!

Hal Townsend/Josie Snipes

Tuesday, March 31st
Dear PDA Family,
Our first session of "at home learning" is almost over. We hope you all have settled into a work/study at home routine, that you have found reasonable ways to relieve the stress, and that you are following guidelines to stay healthy. One way to relieve stress may be to take a break. Our Spring Break was scheduled to begin April 6, and we have decided to take that week off as planned.

Our teachers are currently working on lesson plans for the 2 weeks following Spring Break, April 13-24. On the Monday after Spring Break, April 13, we will have a drive through the parking lot from 11 am -2 pm to drop off completed work and pick up packets for the second 2 weeks of "at home learning". Teachers will come to your car for the exchange. Please do not get out of your vehicle. Lower School packets will be in the lower school parking lot and Upper School in the high school lot. Those teachers in the Upper School who are using Teams will probably continue communicating that way and will not be using packets.

We continue to hope that the virus situation will change so that we will be able to come back to school soon. As soon as it is safe, we will be back. Mr. Leon has been cleaning and will continue to work so that the buildings will be ready for our return.

Students, your teachers and the PDA staff are available by email or Teams to help you. Contact us with your questions.

Your PDA Board, the Academic Committee, and PDA staff are working together to provide the best education possible. With your support we will continue to make the best of our situation.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Ephesians 6:10.

Stay safe,
Hal Townsend/Josie Snipes

We hope you are all well and following personal hygiene and contact guidelines so that you will stay well. Remember to wash your hands often for at least 20 seconds (sing Happy Birthday twice!), stay at home as much as possible, and when you must go out, practice social distancing (stay at least 6 feet away from other people). We are monitoring federal, state and local conditions and will be in touch with you through Gradelink email or Remind if there are any changes to report.
Students, please continue to work through your assignments. Our pickup days last Thursday and Friday, were a 100% success! All virtual school and dual credit students, please continue working according to your guidelines.

Thank you for your cooperation! We don’t have all the answers to this coronavirus situation, but we know God is in control. We will do our best and depend on faith in Him to carry us through.
Stay safe,
Mr. Townsend and Mrs. Josie

1) School closure update from SCISA Executive Director Dr. Spencer Jordan:

Dear Friends,

SCISA member schools shall adhere to  the directive issued today by South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster.  Governor McMaster released the following statement announcing that South Carolina’s schools will remain closed for the duration of the month of April:

At this time, students, parents, and families should plan for South Carolina’s schools to remain closed through the month of April. Our dedicated teachers and school administrators have done a tremendous job in making it possible for our students to learn at home. We understand that the prospect of schools remaining closed for an extended period of time places stress and strain on parents and children. Rest assured, if there is any way to safely open our schools earlier, we will do that, but schools must remain closed to protect the health and safety of South Carolinians.”

SCISA will continue to monitor this situation through consultation with SCDHEC, the Governor’s Office, and other applicable state and federal agencies.  The overwhelming need to carefully weigh the public health and safety of our children, teachers, administrators and their extended families with a decision of when to restart school is a difficult and serious matter.  At this time, no medical expert or healthcare official will recommend the opening of schools due to the possible exposure and spread of the disease.

Should you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at your earliest convenience.

God Bless.

Dr. Spencer A. Jordan

Symptoms to watch for:
The following comes for the Centers for Disease Control website (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/about/symptoms.html)
For confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases, reported illnesses have ranged from mild symptoms to severe illness and death. Symptoms can include:
  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
CDC believes at this time that symptoms of COVID-19 may appear in as few as 2 days or as long as 14 days after exposure. This is based on what has been seen previously as the incubation period of MERS-CoV viruses.

If your child is experiencing symptoms, seek medical help immediately. If your child is experiencing symptoms, do NOT allow him or her to attend school or other events. Absence policies will be relaxed during this period. Please err on the side of keeping your child home. Students should not return to school until they have been free of fever and other symptoms, without the use of fever- or symptom-reducing medicines, for at least 24 hours.
